Alpine Groves project receives award for shoreline restoration

St. Johns County receives award for restoration project

St. Johns County received the Northeast Florida Regional Council’s Resiliency Award for the completion of the Parks and Recreation Department’s Alpine Shores Grove Park Shoreline Restoration Project.

“There continues to be engaging and transformational work happening across Northeast Florida,” Northeast Florida Regional Council CEO Beth Payne said. “It is an honor to celebrate those projects and initiatives that enhance local communities in the region.”

The $908,681 project at Alpine Groves Park (2060 S.R. 13, St. Johns) involved the design, permitting and construction of a rock revetment to stabilize the shoreline. The area’s environment resources were mapped out, then a system was designed and engineered to stabilize the bluff and restore the shoreline with native plants to preserve the wetlands ecosystem. The plantings will not only preserve the natural elements of Alpine Groves Park but also protect its shoreline from future erosion and the potential impacts of rising water levels.

“Alpine Groves Park is one of the jewels of the St. Johns County park system, and this project was vital to keeping it for future generations to enjoy,” Parks and Recreation Director Ryan Kane said.

NEFRC says the project was selected for the Resiliency Award because it demonstrated how an area can utilize resilient strategies to preserve some of its unique natural assets. While not the first use of a nature-based solution in the region, it stands out as a milestone in St. Johns County and an effective and intended use of the funds from a program dedicated to resiliency. The project can serve as a demonstration of how nature-based solutions can be integrated into future County programs.

“We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of this project, which would not have been possible without the invaluable support of the Board of County Commissioners and St. Johns County administration, as well as the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, through their award to the county of a Resilient Florida grant,” Project Manager Tim Connor said. “A heartfelt thank you to Public Works for their unwavering dedication during project delivery, as well as to INTERA Inc. for their expert design and engineering and S.E. Cline Construction for their professional efforts. This collective partnership was key in ensuring the project’s success, and we look forward to its positive impact on our community.”

St. Johns County was recognized for the project at the 21st Annual Regional Awards for Excellence and Elected Officials Luncheon on Jan. 9.

“This shoreline restoration project was a significant success for the future of Alpine Groves Park,” Natural Resources Superintendent Nathan Otter said. “By stabilizing the shoreline, we are safeguarding the park and its amenities, ensuring that they remain a space for everyone to enjoy. St. Johns County is proud to be recognized with the Resiliency Award from the Northeast Florida Regional Council for this important project.”

Freytag Health Plaza - Groundbreaking

Construction begins on the Freytag Health Plaza at Advent Health Palm Coast

PALM COAST, Fla. – AdventHealth Palm Coast broke ground on construction of the two-story Freytag Health Plaza today.

Named in honor of Palm Coast residents Peter and Sue Freytag, the Health Plaza will become a vital hub for cancer treatment, primary care and rehabilitation services.

“We are proud to be a part of this community and are committed to making it a healthier place to live,” said Sue Freytag. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to help people in our community get the best care without having to travel.”

Peter Freytag, a cancer survivor, shared his personal connection to the project.

“Everybody knows someone who has had cancer, just as our family has been impacted by cancer,” he said. “We know that this is a very personal and difficult journey, and we want to do everything we can to support others facing this challenge.”

Spanning 30,000 square feet, the Freytag Health Plaza will house specialized cancer treatment services, including radiation oncology and medical oncology, and will provide advanced therapies and personalized cancer care. The hospital’s Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Center will also relocate within the Health Plaza, offering free resources to patients and their families.

The Freytag Health Plaza will also provide adult rehabilitation services, including outpatient physical, occupational, and speech language pathology. It will be a place of healing for orthopedic, hand, neurological, and lymphedema specialties.

Multiple physician offices within the Freytag Health Plaza will further enhance the continuity and comprehensiveness of care.

“This new facility represents a $30 million investment in enhancing the care available to our growing community,” said Denyse Bales-Chubb, President and CEO for Advent Health Palm Coast and the Flagler/St. Johns market. “Over the next four years, the local population is projected to increase by 5%, while new cancer diagnoses are anticipated to rise by 12%. This highlights the need for expanded cancer treatment, as well as primary care and rehabilitation care.”

The Freytag Health Plaza’s construction is made possible thanks to the incredible support from our community.

“This project was made possible, in part, due to a generous contribution from Peter and Sue Freytag,” said John Subers, Director of the Advent Health Palm Coast Foundation. “Their philanthropic dedication to improving our local health care services has had a profound impact on so many of our loved ones, neighbors, and friends.”

Members of the community can support this project by contacting the Foundation at Call386-586-4440 or visiting AdventHealth.com/PalmCoastGive.

The architect for the Freytag Health Plaza is Orlando-based Hunton Brady and the contractor is Robins & Morton, also from the Orlando area.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Coming Soon: The Promenade at Town Center Breaks Ground

PALM COAST, Fla. – The residential rooftops are filling in and now it’s time for the commercial to follow suit in the Innovation District of Town Center.

The long-awaited groundbreaking for the sprawling 17.35 acres of urban hub known as The Promenade at Town Center has been two and a half years in the making according to William P. Angrick III, founder of Persimmon Capital.

Angrick, a Flagler Beach resident, is helping bring to life the vision for Town Center dating back to 2003 while incorporating feedback shared by the next generation of Palm Coast residents who participated in focus groups to identify those attributes and amenities that would make the area an attractive place to live, work, and raise a family.

The Business of The Promenade

The reinvestment of dollars back into the community by area business owners and the attraction of new businesses to The Promenade enhances the value of the walkable, mixed-use development that will feature 56,793 sq ft of business space with a variety of shops, restaurants, offices and more on the first floor.

“The Promenade at Town Center represents a significant step forward in urban development for the city of Palm Coast and fulfills the original vision for this area,” said Angrick. “With its unique mix of retail, dining, institutional and residential spaces, coupled with its walkability and proximity to the UNF and JU satellite campuses, The Promenade will not only enhance the local landscape but also create a hub of activity and community engagement.”

Greg Blose, President and CEO of the Palm Coast Flagler Regional Chamber of Commerce anticipates an uptick in jobs, starting with the construction process, and the addition of new commercial businesses to the tax base.

Overall, the project sets in motion long awaited Town Center development in a tangible way.

“I think it’s a game-changer, not just because of the size of the project but because of the location right here at Central Park,” said Blose. “These projects take years to even get to this point and so I think when people start to see this, we’re going to have shops, right here on Central Ave, right behind FPC, we’re going to have some residential, some other uses here, it’s really going to be a positive. It’s going to be a mental game-changer for a lot of folks here.”

Active Lifestyle, Healthy Communities

As Flagler County continues to diversify its housing inventory, The Promenade will add to the offerings, especially for those who enjoy an active lifestyle. With a pool and pickleball courts on site, and close proximity to the area’s walking and bike trails, The Promenade’s studio, one and two-bedroom apartment homes will meet the needs of a variety of residents from young professionals all the way to on-the-go seniors.

“We are excited to break ground on The Promenade at Town Center to bring this visionary project to life,” stated Frank Mendola, Director of Development with Persimmon Capital, as they hit the ground running.

“We have other parcels we’ve purchased in the area to do other phases. The same type of mixed-use development too, so we’re very excited about it,” added Mendola. “We always felt that Palm Coast was a diamond in the rough so now it’s finally coming to fruition and we love it.”

“We’re going to have all different types of mixed-use commercial, industrial, and institutional use here too. One big thing is the people are really looking forward to the restaurants more than anything,” he said.

Billed as a best-in-class development, Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin looks to the future of Town Center with great optimism.

“We saw a concept of what Town Center could be,” said Alfin. “This is the first step in what will become the actual not visualization but the actual build of Town Center as it was originally envisioned. What’s happening today is we’re connecting the past to the present which is the build of all of this and then looking forward to the future.”
